What Sponsors Need to Know

DO ALL THE COURSES MY ORGANIZATION OFFERS HAVE TO BE REGISTRY APPROVED?

In the dynamic landscape of continuing education, where staying informed of industry advancements is essential, CPAs and other professionals often turn to National Registry sponsors for quality courses. However, a common source of confusion arises when sponsors offer courses that are not intended for NASBA/Registry-approved credit alongside those that are. This lack of clarity can lead to misconceptions and frustration among CPA professionals seeking accredited education. It is important to clearly designate NASBA/Registry-approved credit courses and avoid assuming all offerings from an approved sponsor are accredited.

The National Registry of CPE Sponsors, administered by the NASBA, ensures that continuing professional education (CPE) providers meet certain standards to offer quality education for CPAs and related professionals. However, not all courses offered by these sponsors may meet the stringent criteria set forth by NASBA.  An approved National Registry sponsor can offer NASBA/Registry-approved credit courses, non-NASBA credit courses, and courses for professions other than CPAs.

The confusion lies in the assumption that all courses offered by a National Registry sponsor are being awarded for CPE credit. This assumption is understandable, given the credibility associated with being an approved sponsor. However, it is crucial for professionals to recognize that not all courses may adhere to NASBA standards. Some courses may be designed for general professional development rather than meeting specific CPE requirements.

To address this issue, National Registry sponsors must take proactive measures to clearly indicate which courses are eligible for NASBA/Registry-approved CPE credit. This can be achieved through prominent labeling and disclosure on course materials, websites and promotional materials. Additionally, sponsors should maintain program documentation to reference and support the credits awarded to attendees.  General use of the National Registry logo and Registry statement on websites and materials should be avoided unless all course offerings have been designed, presented, measured and reported in compliance with the Statement on Standards for CPE Programs and NASBA/Registry requirements.

For CPAs seeking continuing professional education, it is essential to exercise due diligence when selecting courses. Instead of assuming all offerings from an approved sponsor will be accepted towards CPE requirements, professionals should carefully review course descriptions, accreditation statements and any additional documentation provided by the sponsor. When in doubt, reaching out to the sponsor can provide clarity and assurance.
