What You Should Know About How the Brain Works
Kenneth Wesson, Educational Consultant, ScienceMaster.com
We have 100 billion neurons (the "gray matter" consisting of neural cell bodies). Their primary purpose is to connect brain cells together into the circuits that represent who we are, what we know, and what we are capable of doing. Inside the brain, there are over 1,000,000 miles of nerve fibers (the “white matter” connections), with over one quadrillion connections that link neurons with one another. Through this process, we develop remarkable abilities for making sense of an ever-changing world.
It has been said that by the year 2020 the sum total of humankind’s knowledge will double every 73 days. The principles of human learning in the cognitive neurosciences will survive this information explosion, only if we re-focus our attention on making connections across subjects, skills, concepts and academic disciplines. This presentation will highlight the brain-considerate principles and strategies for bridging cross-content understanding.

The Benefits of Adaptive Learning
Dan Mackey, Head of Customer Success and Products, McGraw-Hill
Chris Werling, Director, PricewaterhouseCoopers
Science and research show the endless benefits of adaptive learning. Adaptive learning changes the landscape of learning from a one-size-fits-all atmosphere to a personalized approach, which orchestrates interaction with the learner to deliver a customized approach. One of the most significant changes proposed in the revisions to the CPE Standards is allowing for adaptive learning self study programs within the self study standards.
PwC has been using adaptive learning for internal training for some time on a platform provided by McGraw-Hill. During this session, Chris Werling of PwC and Daniel Mackey of McGraw Hill will share some of the successes they have had in creating adaptive learning courses and how learners react and perform in this format of learning.
Regulatory Considerations for CPE
Elizabeth Wolfe, Counsel of Regulatory Affairs, NASBA
Maria Caldwell, Chief Legal Officer and Director of Compliance Services, NASBA
This session will provide information on recent trends in state legislation and regulatory rulemaking concerning CPE to include a variety of CPE ‘hot topics’ such as the trends in nano-learning, ethics, outlier legislation and the potential impact the Americans with Disabilities Act may have on CPE providers. This session will also highlight the recently launched CPE Audit Service tool and the CPE Rules Engine and how these tools impact the effectiveness of state boards of accountancy.
